I’m happy to live in Berlin.Sure, I rant and rave about gentrification
and rising rents on my various Blogs, but I am still proud to be living in a
city in the midst of change. Yeah, the
old hole-in-the-wall joint I used to eat/drink in has become a yuppie hellhole
of yoga and whatnot. But there are other
holes in other walls.Later they will
become assimilated by the Yogaborg, but at least I WAS THERE. BEFORE.
Sadly, this is also the hipster mantra: ‘Um, like, I did
this stupid ironic thing that I’m doing, like, WAY before it was, like, cool.’
As much as I hate hipsters and yuppies, I do realize that
whenever an area in any given city is cheap enough, cool enough, and available
enough—it is doomed.So I might as well
enjoy it while it lasts.I am REALLY
surprised that I have lived here this long.Every year I take inventory of my meager accomplishments. Every year I get
drunk and proclaim to all my (few) friends that This is the Last Year I Will
Live in This Yuppie Shithole. Then we
all have a laugh and we all have a drink.I am STILL amazed and the breadth and depth of my hypocrisy.
Still I am here.Still, like a beat-down, son-of-a-middle-class-bitch, I rise.
The other day I took a stroll down memory lane.Don’t ever do that, I’m telling you.
The familiar old neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg was home to
me and my lovely wife for 5 years before we were banished to the Berlin
hinterlands.I only mention that my wife
is lovely so you will feel sorry for us when I tell you how we got railroaded
right on out of there by the gentrification scumlords. If it were just grumpy old moi, myself
undich (or me and an ugly wife) who
lost a place to live, you might just think ‘GOOD! Get rid of the grumpy old
ugly fucks and let the new Rich but Sexy Berliners move in!’As one does.
I initially went down to my old Helmholz kiez
(Danziger-Duncker-Prenzlauer Allee) to pick up some second hand lights for
sale.A nice, waiflike couple was
sitting in their empty commercial space waiting to sell me their old lights so
they could embark upon their new voyage of their new image in their new
commercial space.I still don’t know
what in the flying fuck they were selling. There was a counter, a mini espresso
machine and some dishes. And a cat. Their
website is just as mysterious. Apparently that’s all you need in Berlin
if you are a Trustafarian. The lights weren’t as advertised and I couldn’t use
them.So I thanked them for wasting my
time (I did it in a very smooth way, I’m telling you.The couple looked fragile and earnest, and
this combo can still the harshest of tongues. Even mine.) Off I went.
I passed the closed Café Lyrik and remembered the spell cast
by the Witch.Free ‘music’ (using the
term loosely) with overpriced drinks and a performance sounding something like a
steel kitty in a blender (complete with metallic screams and feverish, glass
scratching death knells), followed by a donation cup shaken so vigorously in
our faces that everybody had to stop drinking and stare to see how much we WERE
NOT putting in.Apparently 15 EUR was
NOT enough for the avant garde scheisse we were watching. The Witch told me so.And the Deutschbag at the next table scoffed
out loud when I refused to give more. I
won’t say don’t go there. If you are NOT
a brain dead, self important Trustafarian with delusions of grandeur, you
probably already have the good sense not to (Dunkin’ Berliner flash mob idea:
everybody cram into that tiny ‘art/music’ space, don’t order a damn thing and
then dump a sock full of pennies into the collection plate.Smack those bitches up).
I continued my walk down memory lane (aka Danziger strasse)
and passed the empty windows of the Fuss-feti-fisch.This is a place where you can stick your feet
in a fish tank and have swarms of little fish eat the barnacles and toe jam
right off your sunken feet. There are aquariums in the windows full of feet
sucking fish, lights and signs and benches with towels, but that place is NEVER
open.Meaning: MAFIA MUTHA FUCKAZ.Don’t go there either.Hell, if you need your toe jam eaten, let me
know.I know poor artists who will eat your
toes out on a stage for loose change, I’m tellin’ ya.
No trip down Memory Lane
is complete without a visit to your old flat, the place you used to call home,
the place where some yuppie fucks are now living.Gentrification is a BITCH.I wanted to see the type of quality human
beings who could possibly replace my loser ass, who could possibly be a better
tenant than me, who in the HELL would want to pay more than 600 EUR for a studio
apartment. It couldn't be yuppies; they only live in large lofts, not studio apartments. This I already knew. But I tend to read ahead in the script, so it was
no surprise that the new tenant was just a number:my old
buzzer simply read ‘60’.In fact, most
of the flats in our old building were now part of the growing scourge of holiday rentals in desirable hoods. They weren’t even hiding it.A large
banner now hangs above Dunckerstrasse 90A and proudly proclaims BERLINER LEBEN HOLIDAY
RENTALS.Nine of the 12 flats in our
building were already owned by Das Leben when we moved in. When we lived there,
I do recall an ungodly amount of suitcases thumping up and down the stairs and
late night screams in Mediterranean languages. We were happy to endure it as proud members of the multi-kulti Berlin
life (aka Berliner Leben). But we were forced out. When our contract was ready to be renewed,
they refused us (after paying rent on time every month for a year), saying in
writing “It is a free market. We can
rent to whomever we choose.” Harsh words from harsh cunts. Why have regular
tenants at a fixed rate when you can kick them out and charge 70 EUR per night
as a holiday rental? There is now only
one of our original neighbors left in our building:Riewoldt (pronounced ‘revolt’). As I recall, the door to his flat had been
kicked in a few times and there were blatant splinter/spackle/patch jobs done
on the door.Fight da powah, Herr
Riewoldt.
There is a growing resistance to these types of predatory
rental investors (scumlords, et al) and laws are being drafted as I write this.
As I was doing my due diligence
(Googling), I discovered a fact that would be shocking if I were able to be
shocked at this point.The busy-bodied
little man who dogged us the entire time we lived at Dunckerstr. 90A (saying he
was the hausmeister) was in fact the
very agent provocateur behind the Berliner Leben tenant ousting: Marcus
Buthmann (whom we called Buttman) was talking seven shades of scheisse to the
press about his proud holiday rentals. That’s right: the same Buttman who helped us out the door; the exact
same cocksucker.And that’s not libel—the
man does indeed suck cock.
In a city that changes as much, as often and as constantly
as Berlin, nobody seems to notice
that a very large rug is being pulled out from under our feet.Sure, sluggish student paralegal interns are
rising from their hangovers to wave the flag.Too little, too late. The
scumlords are winning.
I crossed the street with the mixed emotions of knowing I
was right and being powerless to do a damn thing about being wronged. Skinny
old American fucks in suits talked on phones in lofty voices while a German
teenager in hip hop attire trudged by in high swagger mode, oozing anger in his
neo-yuppie hell.Even the small
courtyard recreation area across the street from my old digs was being torn
up.The ruins of the ping pong tables we
used to play upon were lying on the ground beneath the plows of the machine.CAT
operators smoked and laughed in the midst of the mayhem.
I switched to high swagger mode and trudged past the usual
sushi bars, trendy cafes and yoga holes of Yuppie Central.Even my old hole-in-the-wall kebab joint had
been renovated and neon-ensconced. Dunkin’ Berliner truth: the smaller and grungier
the hole in the wall, the better the food. The bigger the space, the more neon cacti, the more bland the food, the more yuppie it is.
Period. This area used to be commie, punk rock, artist, drifter, and
dreamer.Now it is just another
non-threatening place for yuppies and breeders to take root and grow money
trees.Because that’s what
gentrification is all about: rip out the old, plant the new, harvest the money
crop. We who choose to live our lives in pursuit of something other than money
are not worthy of living in a cool neighborhood. We don’t stand a chance. Because we have
neither money nor power; nor do we want anything to do with any of that shit.So They win. Again. Always.
“Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in
their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture,
progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity,
intelligence, and witty banter.”
- urbandictionary.com
“Hipsters are a pretentious group of tiny little waiflike
creatures (male and female) who dress the same, look the same and act the
same—much like any other group of fashion victims.Upper middle class white kid + liberal arts education + thrift store chic =
DOUCHEBAG.”
- Dunkin’ Berliner
O hipster: shall I compare thee to a lump of shit?Thine large glasses offend me; rip them off
and stomp them!Thou art dressed in
skinny jeans which sag at the back!Contradiction?Juxtaposition?Room to carry a
load of dung when startled suddenly, timid creature?
I kept hearing the term ‘hipster’ bandied about in Berlin. It took me a while to give a shit, since all
I care about is Berliner jelly donuts and Berliner spaetis. But then I heard that they are arriving in
droves and driving up Berlin
rents with their trust funds and ‘lofty’ real estate aesthetic. So, looking for a new scapegoat for
gentrification other than yuppies (who have lawyers, thus making it harder to
perpetrate hate crimes with impunity), I decided to research and investigate
this neo-nuisance with all the voracity of one who can devour 6 Berliner jelly
donuts in one sitting and never even THINK of fitting into skinny jeans.
Classification of the creature Hipsteris Urbanitis is easy when beginning from the top down:
- Cap:the hipster
usually wears heavy wool winter caps that are two sizes too large. When the temperatures surpass 80 F, the
hipster’s movements slow to a crawl. They often sit in parks with dull smirks on their faces as the burning
sun and the thick wool slowly turn their lazy brains to mush.
- Eyewear:the
larger, thicker and blacker the glasses, the better; most of the time the
glasses aren’t even prescription.To a
hipster, looking dorky is part of the fashion irony.Perhaps they think that nobody will hit them
if they wear glasses.Heh.
- Beards:often a
hipster grows a beard to differentiate themselves from the gays and the
metrosexuals, who merely have skinny bodies and perhaps only a thin Freddy
Mercury moustache.Hipster beards fall
into one of two categories: Category one: scraggly,
unkempt and sparse.The youngest,
skinniest white kids aren’t often able to grow beards and therefore get an A
for effort in this category. Category two: heavy, dense and long. The jury is out on the reasons for this
heinous hair growth on such a skinny creature. Some say it is an ironic attempt at mimicking the hillbilly look.Perhaps it is a throwback to the Ginsberg
days.Personally, I simply believe they
are members of Al Qaeda.
- Smirk:they think
they are smarter, hipper and cooler than everyone else, so they generally are
seen with the tiniest of smiles while walking down the street. To the casual viewer, they may appear to be
slightly mentally retarded.
- Torso:hipsters are
all about obscurity in the bands they worship (so I’ve read), so a common
hipster t-shirt is adorned with crude artwork and band names like ‘Sonic Death
Monkey,’ ‘Squirrel Bucket,’ ‘Trench Coat Weasels’ or ‘Temple of Pooh.’Many of the band names on their ubiquitous
iPods were formed by combining electric guitars, small, furry animals and
common home and garden implements.
- Pants:skinny
jeans.These tight jeans look spray
painted onto the hipster’s scrawny frame—except for the ass end, which appears to
sag way out of proportion with the rest of the ensemble.Either they are wearing colostomy bags or
they collectively suffer from Diminished Gluteal Syndrome.
- Shoes: don’t get me started. BRIGHT FUCKING ORANGE???
REALLY???
I once sat in a pub in Prague
in the late 90s discussing how to tell the hookers from the ordinary Czech
women. The fad at the time was knee high
leather boots, high heeled. The jury agreed that the hookers had stiletto heels
on their boots; the ordinary Czech girls had blocky high heels.
I once sat in Mauerpark with a group of Germans and one
Irish friend.The German gushed guttural
and nonsensical to me, but the word ‘hipster’ kept popping out of the mish
mash.They were pointing out the
hipsters.I was new to this game.At that time EVERYONE who hung around
Mauerpark was a feckless douche. My damn
self included.
Recently I saw an old acquaintance of mine at the Carnival
of Cultures.His previously-braided
goatee had burst from its tether and bloomed into a wild and wooly spectacle of
chin bush.I cornered him and said ‘ARE
YOU A FUCKING HIPSTER?’ pointing at his wild goat and horn rimmed glasses. He countered with ‘No! You are!’ while
pointing at my sparse, salt-and-pepper gray/black goat.We took turns accusing each other of being
hipsters and heaping bags of douche (in a friendly sort of way).
The word around the campfire is that hipsters don’t know
they are hipsters (or won’t admit it), much in the way that serial killers and
politicians tell themselves they are answering a ‘higher calling.’ As my psych
prof called it, ‘sailing down that famous river in Egypt,
Denial.’
Yes, I have black rimmed glasses. They are not huge. They are normal sized.Yes, I have a goatee, but not a beard. And
there is no fucking way I can fit my Vegas Elvis ass into skinny jeans. My head sweats in winter if I wear a
standard, garden variety skull cap.Plus
I’m twice the age of the average hipster.Innocent, Yer Honor.
I still don’t know what the hipsters are up to.They are probably just the most recent
harmless manifestation of pretentious fashion victims who believe that they are
iconoclastic when in fact they are doing the same damn thing everyone else born
in their circumstances is doing.They
are rather skinny, timid and silent when I spot them.No need to tear them apart, physically at
least.
Unless I find out they are responsible for the rising rents
in Berlin and/or gentrification
in general.Then I’m a goin’ huntin’.
Or How the Berlin
Bear Opened its Butt Cheeks to Corporate Cock
There’s a limit to my patience.Sure, I was forced to move out of P’berg by
greedy landlords—and now I haven’t had my favorite Berliner pfannkuchen mit kirsch for over a MONTH.But now They
have gone too far.The day that a world
class city like Berlin decides to
sell its famous historical landmarks to make way for luxury yuppie scum condos
is a sad day indeed. The East Side
Gallery section of the Berlin Wall may be marked with little metal plaques
proclaiming it to be a historical monument, but that shouldn’t deter would be corporate
raiders. If you are a large investment
company looking for the next big bubble economy to rape and pillage, well,
pilgrim, the Berlin Bear is ready and willing to love you long time.
And like any discreet whore, Berlin
is not your average Tiergarten variety bang-em-against-the-bin-in-the-alley
crack ho, no sir.The Berlin Bear may
have always been poor but sexy, wearing its saggy Russian dancing bear tutu
with shame while it desperately tried to leap through the hoops of progress,
but fear not: times they are a’changin’.For a few million, not only will the Berlin Bear do a little dance, make
a little love and get down tonight—you get total control over the zoo.
On the eve of March 1st, sneaky little bastard
developers removed a piece of the Berlin Wall monument in the middle of the
night.By 9am
the next morning, hundreds of protestors and media (including one pissed off
dunkin’ berliner) brought the whole destruction to a standstill by sheer force
of will. The cops were not afraid. They brought enough of them. At the end of the day, it’s awfully difficult
to do your job as a construction/destruction worker when hundreds of people are
screaming at you.It causes the
jackhammer to fall from trembling fingers.
I’d like to say I got some juicy pics of the Berlin Bear
doing its dirty deeds with the Men in Suits in a seedy alleyway somewhere. But I only got protest photos. The dirty shit
was done behind closed doors.When
confronted by the media, the duplicitous bear trainers and tutu cleaners (aka city
honchos) simply stated that the owners of the site (developers) had the legal
right to do what they wanted to the monument.Waitamotherfuckingminute.The DDR
commies built and owned the Berlin Wall. After the fall of communism, the Wall was owned by the State. So how in the hell did a public/government
owned landmark come to be up for sale to the corPIRATES?
The East Side Gallery restoration group spent millions of euros of EU
money on the complete restoration and renovation of this particular stretch of
the Berlin Wall. They even invited back
the original mural artists who had left their marks and messages of freedom
emblazoned on the wall 20 years before.Acid rain and graffiti wore heavy on the concrete barrier, and during
the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall (2009), the
renovation was completed in a gala ceremony.Hell, I even spent several months making a photo documentary on the
whole process.
And there’s the rub.As a photographer I can take photos of people painting on walls. As a writer I can make frequent and flippant usage of the some of the
most offensive Anglo-Saxon words on offer. But how can I photograph and write about the largest invisible city
killer out there?Berlin
is gentrifying at an alarming rate.Every time I move to a new flat, the rent DOUBLES.Either that or there are 30 people waiting
outside the door of the flat for a group viewing.
The Berlin Bear was beaten by its cruel Russian handlers for
decades. They starved it, poked it, dressed it in a pink tutu and forced it to
ride a bicycle.Any normal wounded
animal would bite back.Instead, this
old bear, poor and helpless without its old master, dragged its battered ass
and tattered tutu in search of a new master.
I don't usually review food which doesn't consist of deep fried bread dough and lard stuffed with jelly filling, but bear with me: I've found two great Asian restaurants to get your Chow Fu on in P'berg. The first is a Real Thai Restaurant called 'Tofu,' and the other is a Chinese restaurant called 'Wok Show.' I will tell you more about these two places if you promise me up front that you have read the terms and conditions and check the box which says 'I have read the terms and conditions so lay it on me, fool' below this blog. Those terms:
1) Forgive their silly names. These are deliberately designed to keep the Yuppie Scum out. Coupled with their hole-in-the-wall appearances, both of these restaurants strive to do only good food and no neon buddhas and shit.
2) If you go there, don't get drunk beforehand like some Limey hooligans out for a post piss up curry. If you are a 'Merican redneck, under no circumstances should you push the soup away and bellow "FUCK THIS SWAMP WATER!!! BRING ME SOME FRIED YAK DICK!!!"
3) If you are any way, shape or form a Yuppie, meaning 'materialistic individuals with no souls and high paying jobs out to ride on the coat tails of other people's experiences and raise their neighborhood rents for good measure,' Stay. The fuck. Away.
If you agree to these reasonable terms, please get ready to have some fantastic food.
I discovered Wok Show by reading some expat comment forum listing cheap eats in Berlin. An individual by the name of Sum Dum Fuk said you can get a massive plate of pot stickers (Chinese dumplings) for 5 EUR. I believe the individual was Asian and I trust him implicitly. I have always hated Chinese fast food because it consists of watery, salty sauce on crunchy, barely cooked vegetables. This is why I tend to order pot stickers or those wacky Chinese pancakes with the mixed filling and plum sauce (called 'Mu Shi,' and oh how the Germans chuckle when I order that one). Anything out of the ordinary, other than the usual sheise you normally get in Euro/Asian dumps. I will cut to the chase now: bring friends and get yourselves 3 plates of 20 dumplings with various fillings. The nice lady who is always there will automatically bring you chop sticks, even if you look as white and dorky and clueless as myself. I recommend putting some dumplings in the small bowl in front of you, soaking it in soy sauce and trying to pick those bad dogs out with those sticks. After you've dropped a few on the table, feel free to bow and apologize and order knives and forks. The kind staff will stop laughing at you, turn off the Chinese Candid Camera and bring you the cutlery of your choice. Guten apetit!
'Tofu' Thai restaurant was recommended to me by a Czech friend who has been living in Germany for 20 years. Normally I wouldn't trust the culinary advice of anyone whose culture cooks with ketchup as a rule. But since Milan spent many years traveling to and from Asia and he said the place has the proper portrait of the Thai king on the wall and the staff answers you if and when you speak Thai to them.....it's the shizzle.
I know nothing of Thai food because what I've had so far hasn't impressed me. Cutting to the chase once again, get any of the red or green curry dishes. Or anything. I chose the dish with the highest number of chili pepper icons, which was only two. I had a dish last night called something like 'Gak Tung Burn' which was so spicy that I'm still tasting it when I cough. BRILLIANT. I LOVE spice and find it all but impossible to find spicy food in Central Europe because Central Europeans are a bunch of fuckin' pussies. No flavor other the die sauer kraut.
'Tofu' is not a hippy joint in spite of its unfortunate name. It is a hole in the wall--as is 'Wok Show,' but I have found that the very best food is ALWAYS found in the tiniest, most run down holes you can imagine. You see, without all the neon buddhas, silk dresses and gold tea cups, they can concentrate on making delicious food while keeping the yuppie hordes out.
The following is a letter sent to Exberliner Magazine after reading that they want us to 'Save Berlin.' I am all for it. Hence the letter I sent them:
Open Letter to a Foreign Media Publication
on the Impending Gentrification of Berlin
By Craig Robinson
I want to save Berlin. I want to give that big ole bear a human hug and throw innovative ideas into the whirlpool of creativity. I want to stop the Atomic Bomb of Mall Culture from being dropped onto the last ‘island of affordable civilization for outcasts and dreamers’. I shouldn’t have any right to care about Berlin as I’ve been living here for less than 6 months. But I do. Over the last 15 years I have witnessed the gentrification of every place on earth I’ve ever lived in for any significant length of time.
Sacramento, San Francisco, London, Dublin, Prague. I came. I saw. Yuppies conquered. The cost of living in each of these places has gone up tenfold in as many years. But the average wages stayed way below the new high water mark.
Submitted for your perusal: Notes on the Global Gentrification Wars
as witnessed by concerned citizens, friends and comrades.
I am not submitting any ideas to your ‘Save Berlin’ action, as obviously I am too late. But please consider the following, especially in light of the fact that your current issue is about ‘the yoga craze.’ Even though I do not have adequate authority as a gentrification expert—only as a witness—I still feel obligated to point out the glaring hypocrisy in declaring your intent to ‘Save Berlin’ from gentrification, mallification, etc., when you clearly are serving up heaping portions of brine to the yuppie larvae in the form of a ‘yoga issue.’ Yoga is New Age Bollox. It was invented by well-meaning Indian gurus 1000s of years ago and appropriated by ex-hippies-turned-new-age-yuppies in California in the 90s. It spread like a disease from there. The only people who follow the yoga craze are certain neo-hippies and yuppies. The neo-hippies don’t have the money for these highly priced yoga courses and such, but their rich parents do. Please consider who you accept your advertising income from and who your target audience is. I fully intend to buy your yoga issue and read it. Perhaps I am wrong and it is a parody on yuppie life, in which case I will be extremely pleased and offer my sincere apologies. In the meantime, the following is a list of warning signs that will signify the beginning of the end of any neighborhood, to whit; gentrification is coming fast and furious.
SUSHI JOINTS – few foods suggest yuppie scum like sushi. Unless you are born in Japan, if you eat sushi on a regular basis, you may as well have a gold card and a Beamer parked up your ass.
YOGA – yuppies without soul shop for religion. They already jog, but that’s free (except for the $500 jogging gear). What better way to satisfy the exercise instinct AND the craving for something ‘meaningful’ to fill their empty, materialist lives?
GALLERY / ARTIST LOFT DISTRICTS – this one needs no explanation. First comes the cheap gallery / artist loft spaces, next comes the barrage of Beamers (God, I hate Beamers, but you may substitute whatever trendy piece of crap the yuppies are driving these days: Lexus, Hummer, etc.). Here’s an actual authority: http://einstellung.so36.net/en/ps/524. And a concerned post by myself (dunkin’ berliner) on the gallery/artist space rental situation in Berlin: http://www.toytowngermany.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=91587&st=0
UBER BRAND CAFES – Starbuck’s, etc. Overpriced ‘half-caff-triple-latte-lemon-bullshit’ is for yuppies. Nobody else drinks that shit. Ever.
Following is a historical timeline of some grass roots struggle for our turf. Call it Crips vs. Bloods with slightly fewer bullets.
Thwarting Gentrification Strategy I: Grass Roots Class Warfare
San Francisco, CA, mid 1990s:
Threatened District: The Mission District, predominantly Hispanic families, students and artists.
The Threat: Encroachment from neighboring hip districts, rising rents displacing generations of original residents.
The Response: Whatever vehicle the yuppies were parking in the Mission District too long would receive a welcome basket in the form of a bumper sticker applied to many a BMW, Lexus, etc: ‘Die Yuppie Scum.’ The Mission does not fuck around. They managed to thwart gentrification much longer than most other S.F. districts. In the end, the dot com craze swept almost everyone under the income level of 80k per year (who didn’t already own their property) out of the City. Permanently.
Sacramento, CA, late 1990s:
Threatened District: Midtown Sacramento and surroundings, a mix of every race, income level and lifestyle.
The Threat: Suburban yuppies stuck in gridlock on the way to their downtown offices are drawn to the newly-renovated Victorian architecture in the old Midtown neighborhoods, which happened to be much closer to their offices. In addition, a large influx of Bay Area urban refugees hit Sacramento, driving up the rents.
The Response: Sadly, almost none. Residents sat around for years with their thumbs up their collective asses and watched their rents go from $400 per month up to $1200. Then they left. One response of note: a punk rock couple who ran an independent video store in a prime district in Midtown Sac fought back. Their store bulletin board was designed for other musicians, artists and film people to post notes to each other. A preponderance of irrelevant New Age fliers started to appear, aromatherapy workshops, yoga lessons, etc. The staff responded by placing a large notice on the board: NO FUCKING YOGA FLIERS!!!!
Thwarting Gentrification Strategy II: I Wish I Had One
But in lieu of a competent strategy, I would suggest that all foreign language media publications (i.e. anything not published in German language) start a disinformation campaign or at least a misinformation campaign. Everybody who has read anything about Berlin knows that it’s ‘poor, but sexy.’ That unemployment is high. This doesn’t discourage anyone from coming here. Especially yuppie scum. They are desperate to be hip. They can buy almost anything with their salaries and their credit. But they can’t buy cool. I am not cool. Nor are most of my friends. We are mostly poor. But we care about our neighborhood, our city and our lives. Dear Editor of a Foreign Language Publication in Berlin, pretty please, with sugar on top: tell the yuppies to fuck off. How you do it is up to you. A little hint: don’t advertise ‘penthouse flats with a view of Berlin for only 1200 euros per month!’ That’s a start.
